Are you planning rail travel around Europe in 2017? Then why not take a look at the latest edition of our Europe by Rail book?

The 14th edition of Europe by Rail: The Definitive Guide for Independent Travellers was published in June 2016. Five months on, the book has already been reprinted once. So it’s selling well and it’s certainly pulled some good reviews.

“The book is an alluring combination of evocative writing and practical advice... It is also a history of Europe in 50 train journeys,” wrote Simon Calder in The Independent in June.

The travel writer Vitali Vitaliev reviewed the new edition in Engineering & Technology Magazine in October 2016. “Get on board a European train armed with this guide and you’ll be in for a great ride,” advised Vitali.

You can read more extracts from reviews on the front page of www.europebyrail.eu.

The book showcases some of the very best rail routes around Europe, empowering readers to strike out from main lines to explore rural byways and offbeat parts of Europe’s rail network. “There’s plenty of scope for planning long itineraries,” explains Nicky Gardner who has written most of the text for this new edition. “So whether you are heading from London to Lisbon, or planning a train trip from Stockholm to Siracusa, Europe by Rail is the perfect guide.”

“But the book is great for short trips too,” adds Nicky. “We point out interesting detours and diversions and, even on main routes, we suggest some of the less obvious places to break a journey,” she says.

The book is widely available through the book trade so you should be able to order it through all good bookshops. The online book retailer Wordery offers free worldwide delivery for customers ordering Europe by Rail. We list a few more retailers in the Buy the Book section.

The book is a far cry from earlier editions of the title. “We have rethought the entire book from scratch,” comments Nicky Gardner, “There is more emphasis on the actual journeys, and we have taken a lot of care in planning routes which pick up on the very best of European culture and scenery,” she explains. “The result is a 496-page book which builds on the title’s strong tradition as one of Europe’s best-selling travel guides.”

Europe by Rail: The Definitive Guide for Independent Travellers makes the perfect Christmas gift. Do look out for the bang up-to-date 14th edition. The book’s ISBN is 978-0-9929073-5-8. It is published by European Rail Timetable Limited. The book’s authors are Nicky Gardner and Susanne Kries, two women who together edit and publish hidden europe magazine.
