From Basel to Milan via the historic Gotthard railway
The Gotthard is Switzerland. And Switzerland is the Gotthard. The mountain is intimately linked to Swiss national identity. Swiss self-awareness, be it on a social or a political level, is fundamentally underpinned by a shared understanding of the Swiss landscape that includes neat Alpine pastures with cows in attendance, an obligatory mail coach (or modern post bus) and trains. How could we not include the Gotthard railway in this book?
