We chanced this week on a timetable for European night trains in 1999. So it’s interesting to look back and see which trains were running 25 years ago. By 1999, many European high-speed lines were already up and running, so the overnight network had already been trimmed back from its peak in the 1970s and 1980s.

Russia today announced the suspension of all direct rail services via Ukraine to the Balkan region. This affects direct trains from Moscow to Budapest, Bucharest and Sofia.
